Sphyx History

Sphynx cats as a breed are named after the gorgeous Sphinx in Egypt, though the cat is spelled with a "y" instead of an "i". They were given this name for their sophisticated look and graceful nature. The Sphinx cat figure appears in ancient Greece as well! They were used to guard the Necropolis against looters and evil doers.

These are also representations of Bast/Bastet and the sacred cats of ancient Egypt, though the cat breed appeared around 1960 As a breed, Sphynx breed has long been associated with mystic powers, particularly in Russian culture. In Russian myth, the Sphynx cat is considered a symbol of good fortune and abundance.
